Summary

This is a novel of time and place, set 25 years ago on British Columbia’s West Coast. The Baby Boomers who had gone back to the land were poised on the edge of their mid-life crisis. Main Street was unpaved, wood heated geodesic domes were the ideal. Matt Doyle fled Vancouver after a nervous breakdown and a divorce, looking for a simple life on a Gulf Island. He was beginning to tire of goat’s milk and granola, when his live-in girl friend, Julie Strachan, announced that she was pregnant. Until then, the over-educated and under-employed had had time to wrestle with the big issues, during other people’s working hours. What will happen to Matt’s spiritual quest when they run out of diapers? Happy ending – he reaches financial and personal stability. It is a humorous and affectionate look at the dreamers who never quite grew up. (69,200 words)

Writer’s Note

TREASURE THE MOMENT by Richard von Fuchs von.fuchs@chello.hu

I was only a fringe hippy since I had 2 diplomas, a high school teaching job requiring a necktie, a legal wife, etc. From 1973 to 1990 I was a marginal worker in a variety of occupations mostly on Vancouver Island. I wrote this in Hungary in 1996 while waiting for the birth of my son in 1996. Tnd then lost the manuscript for 10 years. The story is dated but the problems of making a living and what to believe in remain germane today.
