Summary

In a post-apocalyptic world, Luis, Clark and their crew set out from St. Louis in a makeshift steamboat in hopes of finding what's left of civilization, or failing that, at least some women. The world they explore in the upper reaches of the Missouri is more depopulated, wild and devoid of technology than the one that the historical Lewis and Clark encountered three centuries prior, and possibly more dangerous. Wild animals, weird characters, one left-behind sexy android, a teen-aged femme fatale, and a sketchy religious group keep things interesting, while the crew's chaplain, John the Blacksmith, is convinced that the Last Days have arrived.

Writer’s Note

This novel is based, in part, on the real life journals of Lewis and Clark, on which it is (very) loosely based. Like all good science fiction, it asks the question, "What if?" In this case, "What if there were almost no women left, after a series of plagues destroys the world?" The women have been decimated not just by the plagues but by the violence and superstitions of men, in a world where chaos reigned. One result is rampant homosexuality, so don't read this book if you're opposed to all things gay.

And of course this is a road trip book, an odyssey through a circus of horrors, in which some characters manage to keep their sense of humor and proportion while others don't.
