Summary
After 20 years of Christian dedication Michael and Merrill Abernathy are in spiritual crisis. Michael's intense study has uncovered the faith-shaking history of bible literature and in a frenzied attempt to organize his thoughts, he writes a fictional novel about a man who leaves his religion and writes a book about a man leaving his faith. This is just the beginning of how life mimics art. In the months that follow the book's success drives into the heart of religious opposition and stirs a community to outrage and a court trial, closely resembling what happens in Michael's book. As terrifying as these events are to the Abernathy's, they become even more afraid of how Michael's book ends.
